A close friend in our church texted me this question today amidst the whirlwind of conspiracy theories wildly blowing among believers on social media.
“What are your thoughts towards the uproar of believers posting conspiracy type things online (especially today)? I feel overwhelmed by the amount of fear and disunity.”
This is the worst of Christianity in America. Conspiracy theories are birthed in fear. This is all very convoluted at the grass roots level because people don’t trust leaders for good and bad reasons. Here are my thoughts in short form:
- The virus is real. We (Christ-followers) should do our best to be responsible citizens out of obedience to our God who teaches us to pray for and submit to our leaders as far as possible without disobeying God. Also, we live in communities with people we call our neighbors we are to love relentlessly. So we follow guidelines to love and protect others.
- The virus could have been manufactured in a lab in Wuhan or it could be a natural, viral, “perfect storm.” Who knows at this point? Don’t focus on conspiracy (whichever one you are focused), focus on Kingdom.
- God is using all of this for His glory and our good. Trust Him. To quote Tom Foolery, “Sometimes you have to get sick, my boy, before you start feeling better.”
- It is obvious who is walking by faith in a biblical way in this season. Look for love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. That is the fruit of the Spirit present in the believer no matter the circumstances. Not perfection or the absence of pain and suffering. Just the fruit of the Spirit in the pain and suffering. (Galatians 5:22-23)
- Within American Christendom there appears to be a divide driven by political alliance and personal economic interests. This isn’t good within Christianity because it shows many Christians in America are party or pocket first, Kingdom second or third.
- According to the Bible we live in the end times but time is relative to our very limited perspective and God is above time.
- Our role whether it is our last day on earth or the last day of the earth is to press into mission. We love God and we love people and point everyone to Jesus in love.
Conspiracy theories are a waste of time and energy for the follower of Christ in my opinion. We just need to know the King (Jesus) and the Kingdom agenda and then we do our part to abide in Christ and bear much fruit and so prove to be his disciples NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCE (John 15). Even if one of the hundreds of conspiracy theories flying around out there are true and we find that out, what are we going to do? “See, I told you so?” How does that forward the Kingdom of Jesus?
Don’t waste your life on conspiracy follower of Jesus. KINGDOM, KINGDOM, KINGDOM.

True Christian loves Truth.
So one should dig deep for it and be aware of what is REALLY happening in the world. One should trust in God and yet, use the gift of intellect to discern facts from fiction. That means treating conspiracy theories with an equal amount of healthy skepticism, as the stories served by mainstream media. There lies and truths to be found in both.
Do not succumb to fear, but also do not hide in the comfy cave of ignorance.

I agree with some of what you said but I think you need to define what “conspiracy theories” are. Unfortunately people genuinely concerned about certain truths being kept from the people are mislabelled because that is a convenient way to program the masses to keep away from anyone who doesn’t toe the line! There is a difference between the “rendering to Caesar what is Caesar’s” mentality and completely bowing down to the enemy without seeking truths for yourself. And I carefully say truths and not truth, because as Christians we know that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life but the enemy is a liar – he seeks to steal, kill and destroy and that also means the truth in all respects. If you are wise you will be discerning in your research but don’t not look at all – that’s crazy, sorry but it is. We are living in very strange times – reality is being carefully and skilfully manipulated in so many ways to confuse us; but sometimes the Devil can disguise himself as an angel of light and that may very well mean the opposite of what you think it means. Just because the media says it’s a conspiracy theory don’t immediately think that means it’s nutty – I think the opposite. I usually think why don’t they want us to look into that – what are they hiding? But that’s just how I roll.

I find it very hard to put full faith into preachers who do not teach the Holy Bible verse by verse and chapter by chapter. Most preachers are one verse chatlies and make their sermon around that one verse. I use to go to church and listen to preachers sermons. Then I’d go home and read my Holy Bible to see if that the preacher said was truth. Most the of the time it was not truth! I do not put my stock in Tradtions of Men! Churches don’t even follow what the Holy Bible says! Y’all celebrate Easter, Holloween, Christmas! Do you know Easter is an Abomination to God? Do you know peachers teach all you followers to follow the Anti-christ? Preachers teach the Rapture Theory. Why you you teach the rapture theory, when it’s NOT IN THE HOLY BIBLE?
When people tell another view of a situation, people call them Conspiracy theorist. I totally disagree with what you write!

So, what do you say about the countries, where because of the lockdown, they are not allowed to have service, they are not allowed to go out and check on their people, they are not allowed to baptize people, they are not allowed to even do the sacrament. And that churches may be the last things allowed to open? Just asking.

WE are the church. Not the building. Church services are being held on multiple venues. Online, on the television. If they only worship you give is in a church, reconsider that. We are to praise God every moment of the day, and every day. May God touch you with that fact and may you find peace talking to God every moment of every day. God is here, all around us. It is BECAUSE I am a Christian that I have the kind of “righteous anger” that Jesus displayed when He turned over those tables at the temple. Jesus saw they were corrupting what was supposed to be God’s house of worship. WE are now His living temples. HE lives inside each of us. HE guides us in ways of righteousness. We are not a building, but we SHOULD be a community of believers. It is not about being political. It IS about following the truth and the truth is slowly being uncovered as to who the Godless are. We are God’s hands, feet, ears, eyes and voice here on this earth to evangelize His word. We can not do that if we are being locked up either from our own fear or by people who are exercising control they should not have over our lives. We can and we SHOULD be praying. We should also be helping those who can not speak for themselves. Isolated we can do nothing except quietly accept, even welcome, the peace God gives us when we give our problems to Him. But what about when He says back to you … “What can YOU do …” God does HIS part … but faith without works?? … God’s blessings on all of you.

This actually isn’t true. We have quarantined the healthy before. The Spanish flu and polio pandemics both were social distancing, stay at home. Churches, schools and businesses closed. Then they reopened when it passed. It will happen again.

Jesus showed righteous indignation over those who loved money first (the economy.) He taught us not to put first our needs, our rights or our 401K. We are called to serve and sacrifice. Conspiracy theories are and show a spirit of anger and often prejudice.

I agree. Discerning truth from falsehood is not the responsibility of us Christian laypeople. We can leave that to our pastors to sift through the news and let us know what opinions we should have. Our job is to just love Jesus and not engage with culture in any way, except for watching old Veggie Tales shows before it got taken over by sinners.
When John the Baptist was beheaded for calling out the corruption of a government leader in his time, he was misguided. He should have just said, “I’ll pray for you bro,” and that would have been more loving. Calling people names is icky, like “brood of vipers,” and Jesus would never do that.
When Paul engaged the Greeks directly that was also problematic. The Greeks were probably offended because what Paul was teaching was anti-science. (God became man and raised from the dead?! Give me a break).
SCIENCE in all caps is really straightforward, all scientists agree, and on the COVID issue there are no respected scientists or doctors who have an opposing view. I’m not a scientist myself, but according to Facebook comments sections and Snopes.com, these alternate views have been “debunked” so that settles it.
Really, we should remove ourselves from culture as much as possible and just be kind. How does that verse go? We are to be “as harmless as doves.” There was some part about a serpent, too. But snakes are gross so I’m sure that part doesn’t count.

What You said does not line up with THE WORD. If We are lead by RUACH HAKODESH ( HOLY SPIRIT) one of the things We will be lead into is ALL TRUTH. JOHN 16:13. It is not the responsibility of a Pastor to lead Us in to ALL TRUTH because We are all supposed to be scholars of YAH’S WORD. Do We as Individuals know Everything, NO, but RUACH HAKODESH will lead Us to a Person whether a Pastor or a layman to get the answer.

Nope. I’m sure he knows a lot more than I do and walks a narrower path, but we’re obligated to find and know truth, pursue justice and live free, not just for ourselves but for our love for others for whom we want the same. We deserve better, or at least the chance to fight for it.

Which “facts” are you referring to? And moreover, why would someone just simply give blind trust to “scientists” who may well have ulterior motives?
Here’s a simple thing about the “facts” that make me NOT trust the “experts”. The “experts” changed the way deaths are coded to assure that the Covid-19 number is big and scary. If that were not the motive then the “died with” Covid-19 would be a private number used by the “experts” to assess its impact on co-morbidity. They would ONLY publicize the “died from” number. An Illinois health official recently stated that even in a case when a hospice patient dies CLEARLY of another cause… they’re to be counted as a Covid-19 death if they’re found to be positive.
If you have leukemia and get the flu accelerating your death… your cause of death is leukemia. In fact, the flu is a common killer for leukemia patients. But take the same situation with Covid-19… you are counted in the national Covid-19 death total.
Why would I trust people who are changing the rules to trick people into agreeing with their narrative?
PS- how is your admonition to “listen to the experts” with that level of FAITH not an opinion?

Exactly Scott T. We’re being lied to. Ignoring blatant lies that are affecting people’s health, rights, and well being can’t be the right thing, can it? For me, no. I am well armed with truth, knowledge, and respect. It drives me a bit crazy and it’s hard and sometimes I breakdown crying, but I feel I have to try.
Maybe for other Christians, it is best they keep quiet. If that’s the case, don’t suppress others who have a different calling.

Oh my! I SO respectfully disagree! Praise God that Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, and the list could go on…didn’t take this approach. They were leaders in tackling injustice!! Christianity and discernment go hand in hand. If asking questions, listening to opposing views, and sharing those differences of opinions is somehow considered “conspiracy minded” then we are far worse off than I ever thought we were!! God help us!

I am a believer. I absolutely disagree with what you are saying. I stand for truth and like a believer, the road is narrow. When you label people (me), as you have done, a Conspiracy Theorists (CT), like the CIA used it against people when they questioned the JFK assassination – a derogatory connotation disqualifying my thoughts and concerns. Are we (I) the worst Christians in America ? We are not birthed in fear but we hammer for the TRUTH. Pres. Trump a Russian agent – Looks like not as the TRUTH is coming to light. Was I wrong to have discussions, sometimes heated, with friends because the pieces and parts were not adding up – Just like COVID-19. I was told I was a CT and a fool. Maybe God blessed me with a little discernment and that’s ok. The virus IS real and man-interjected to make it what it is. It may or may not have been released on purpose and I don’t care really. We did what we had to do until we learned from and about it. To discount the TRUTH and hide from it, making people feel small, inadequate and call us the worst Christianity (Christians) in America, makes me question you as a pastor. It would be interesting to know your views on many subjects. Do you tickle the ear ….. just my thoughts.

I don’t know you, but I do know Brian Haynes. He is a wise, compassionate, humble, decent human being. He loves and fears God, and he loves and serves people. As a pastor, he is courageous in speaking the truth in love, even knowing that there will always be blowback from someone. This post is an example of that. No one who knows Pastor Brian would ever accuse him of being someone who tells people what they want to hear.
I almost never comment on his posts, but I felt I had to this time. I encourage you to prayerfully consider the message he has shared.

Rodger – I totally agree with you! I started getting a gut feeling that things weren’t right. I prayed for the Lord to guide me, and I spent a few days searching for the truth. I learned a lot! I started connecting the dots, and what is going on hit me like a ton of bricks! Then I found another video that put together what I had already found, and confirmed it. As Christians I believe we are to be aware of what is going on in the world. We are to search out truth. Also, when I know the truth, I know how to pray more effectively. Thankfully, I know lots of believers who are aware of what’s going on. It’s just sad that some listen to the brainwashing propaganda. It’s not a conspiracy theory… it’s a conspiracy, and there’s plenty of evidence. People just have to be willing to let the Lord guide.

Julie, you just admitted that you looked around until you found something that coincided with your beliefs and then when you found it, accepted that it must be truth. That is so dangerous. Just because you believe something or want to believe something, doesn’t mean it’s true, even if others believe it too. That is not how you research. That doesn’t prove anything! We don’t research by deciding what we want to believe and then looking for others to confirm. So irresponsible, and yet so common. Sigh.

I respectfully disagree with this article. Conspiracy is a word that people use to discredit a differing opinion. Many things that people believe can be backed by research and especially history. The popular opinion is not always the correct opinion. We know from the past (and present) that propaganda is used to consciously and subconsciously manipulate people’s opinions. A great example of this is Nazi Germany. Many people had no idea the corruption and horrendous events that were happening for years. They discredited, silenced, arrested, and killed anyone with an opposing opinion. Nevertheless, in reality the holocaust and all the events leading up to it did happen.
I don’t believe it is not having faith to notice corruption and stand up to it. Any religious belief can be considered a conspiracy. The second coming of Christ is a conspiracy to many, as well as, the many prophecies leading up to it. However, it is one thing to be crippled by fear and another to stand up in faith and fight against corruption. Christ himself stood up against injustice. This of course should be down with, and out of, love and respect toward others.

Disagree. If God wanted us to give up our rights, then we’d all be in prison right now or Christianity would not be prevalent in America. Our forefathers declared our right to freedom of religion amongst other things, Just because you are a follower of Christ doesn’t mean you give up your rights as a citizen. We should not give up our rights as humans or Christians because crazy people want to take them away. And it’s okay to ask why and it’s okay to ask questions. It’s okay to hold on to your faith and your rights as a citizen. If we lay down our rights we lay down our freedom. If we lay down our freedom, we lay down our faith. Just a thought.

There is a great difference between discipleship and Christianity. One is focused on grace and yielding, the other entitlement and status. And that is the biggest problem the church faces today especially in North America. Discipleship never flourishes where it’s easy to call yourself a Christian.

Respectfully, I don’t agree that our “right” to move about unfettered or to live our lives In comfort are God’s chief concerns. These are luxuries that we, as American Christians have been fortunate enough to have in abundance and now feel entitled to.
In an earthly sense, things didn’t turn out too well for any of the early Christians, did they? Their lives were marked by unjust treatment, persecution and martyrdom. They achieved God’s purpose though.
So we’re (not directed at you specifically) going to whine about temporarily not being able to get haircuts or go out to eat?
In comparison to our predecessors, us Christians today seem to be pretty fat and happy.

I think part of the problem is that some Christians value their American citizenship as being on par with their heavenly citizenship. They wrap their Christianity in the American flag. God doesn’t owe us anything because we are Americans. One is of temporal value, the other ia eternal. Patriotism should always take a back seat to discipleship. Scripture is inspired, infallable, and sacred. Our American constitution is not.

Spending ALL your time only worrying about a conspiracy is a waste of time. I was talking with a few fellow Christians the other day asking where the line is in regards to respecting our leaders. You mentioned submitting to our leaders as far as possible without disobeying God. One of the theories is that there will be a “mark” to show you have certain vaccines or other information that can be read through that mark. To my knowledge that is disobedience to God. Are we to wait until that point to say to ourselves “Wait, we better stop submitting now.”? Is there going to be a well known Christian leader step up publicly and tell the people to stand up? Just some legitimate thoughts and questions.

I think it’s important to not follow political leaders as though they are religious leaders-they are not. Political leaders must be viewed through a Christian lens that allows us to evaluate their actions and most of the time they will be lacking. I think it is better to look to those that are exhibiting Christ’s love and see what they say, for me, that is the healthcare workers sacrificing their safety and health. For that reason, I will do what I can to keep them safe.

I understand what you are saying, and I agree that God and His Kingdom always should be first in our hearts and minds and souls. But we are also called to be salt and light, engaged IN the world but not OF the world; to stand for righteousness and justice (Micah 6:8 “He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?”) to be wise and discerning (Phil 1:9-10 “And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ”) and speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15: but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ”).
If there is evil at work, and especially when it involves others’ lives physically, spiritually, and economically, I think we have a responsibility to stand united against it; to stand for truth, for life, and for personal and religious liberty….yet in the fragrant aroma of Christ, not a stench. I was just reading another person coming forward with more bad stuff when all it boiled down to is she just wanted to sell her book. You said it Pastor! Creating/spreading drama and spending our time on things that don’t forward God’s kingdom is a waste. Stay away from too much news and social media. Concentrate on relationships and getting to know the people in your neighborhood. You would be surprised how much it is needed for the body and soul, both your and others!

Maybe God did not equip or call you to speak the truth and expose lies, but do you really want to judge and speak out against those who feel led to do so?

It’s not creating or spreading drama when you are trying to warn people of evil being done that could in fact end up hurting them or their family in the near future. As Christians, we are to stand against evil and wrong doing. The right kind of news and social media helped me to understand what is really going on, and for this I am grateful. … and it will help to forward the kingdom when we stop what’s trying to harm the people of God’s kingdom.
