Stand by the roads and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it and find rest for your souls. -Jeremiah 6:16
As ministry leaders we are once again returning to the truth of Scripture. We are rediscovering ancient paths cut by God as we work to connect church and home for the intentional spiritual formation of the next generation. Passages like Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Psalm 78, and Matthew 28:18-20 are not only foundational to our theology but they are becoming again essential elements in our practice of discipleship. How is it that we as church leaders can equip parents to play the lead role in the faith development of their own children?
Many models have emerged in recent years demonstrating how the church can partner with the family in an effort to be intentional with faith at home. A couple of years ago I wrote a book to the ministry leader audience called Shift: What it Takes to Finally Reach Families Today. The purpose of the book is to help local church leaders discover a simple strategy called “milestones” that can inseparably link church and families in the discipleship process based on the concepts of the Scripture. Readers of “Shift” found the path of milestones gave them a plan for shifting their current ministry models in ways that every day people would understand and actually embrace.
The Legacy Path: Discover Intentional Spiritual Parenting is written for parents based on our experiences as Dad and Mom walking the path of milestones at home. If your church is connecting church and home, if you are practicing milestones, you will find this book to be the best way to help your parents understand the strategy and how it can work at home. Imagine intentional spiritual parenting taking place in the families of your church. How would your church change? How would the community change? How would the next generation change?
I hope you will take the time to read this and pass it on to the parents in your church. Use it in small groups, make it the primer text for the parents attending your parent summits, seminars, or parenting classes. Help families discover the ancient path and be a part of what God is doing now for the next generation! Let’s work to leave a legacy that matters.
The Legacy Path: Discover Intentional Spiritual Parenting will release June 2011
