As Christian parents, one of the most important gifts we can give our children is The Very Words of God. Think about this for a moment. Dt. 6:6-7 says it this way:
“These commands I give to you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
“Easier said than done,” you think to yourself. Let me tell you about 3 easy ways Angela and I have found to impress the Word of God on the hearts of our children.
1) Music. When our kids learn the Scripture in the form of a catchy tune, they remember it forever. I have two problems though. FIrst, I am not a musician and need some help in this arena. (If you saw me lead worship with our staff that dredful Sunday you know what I mean.) Second I do not like the genre of “Cheezy Christian Music” that so often puts Scripture to music. Give me something enjoyable to listen to that the whole family can connect with. If you are looking for a good resource to help you out with this let me suggest SEEDS FAMILY WORSHIP. This is some of the best music I have heard. Every word comes straight from Scripture. I was in Nashville a while ago and met Jason Houser, the leader of SEEDS FAMILY WORSHIP. 2)Memory Cards. Nothing new about memory cards. I have found a resource I really like called FOUNDATION VERSES. The resource is developed by David Michael, Children’s Pastor at John Piper’s church. The cards are great because they are 200 of the most foundational Scriptures in all of the Bible. They are small and easy for your child to use. On one side, a verse is clearly printed along with the reference. The other side contains a picture illustrating the meaning of the verse. You show your child the picture and he or she quotes you the verse. It is a great way for you to help them learn the Bible. I have been using these cards with my daughters for 5 weeks now. We do one verse a week and they have memorized 5 verses. It is part of our “bedtime” routine. They honestly enjoy the challenge and love the time with Dad. Later I pray they will remember the importance Dad placed on Scripture. I also pray that the verses they memorize will come to their minds when they need them most.
3)Blessing Cards. We can all pray Biblical blessings over our children as they fall asleep and before they leave for a busy day. As we pray the Scripture over them they hear the repetition and they learn the Scriptures. Angela and I have used a little guide called “A Father’s Guide to Blessing His Children” for years. This guide comes with about 40 Biblical blessings to pray over your kids. This is a two-fer. You are blessing your kids and they are learning the Scripture. Find these in the Legacy Resource Center at Kingsland or www.desiringGOD.org.
Really, this stuff is not rocket science. It just takes a little intentionality. Jump in there and impress the Words of God on your kids. You can do this!

One resource that our boys (ages 4 & 6) have enjoyed is a book called “My ABC Bible Verses” by Susan Hunt (published by Crossway). There is a verse and applicational story for each letter of the alphabet. Everyone in our house learned the 26 verses while learning to apply them to situations little kids can relate too. The list of verses is excellent! The stories are fun and very real. I highly recommend this title for any parent of kids 3-7 years old. The author places a big emphasis that when we memorized God’s Word the Holy Spirit will help us make right choices as a result.
Another thing we do at home is to make a list of a verses for common wrong attitudes we are all guilty of. Whenever our kids (or us as parents) are caught acting the wrong way we will quote the verse. Our kids have memorized all verses by now without the need of drilling, but hearing them regularly as we walk by the way. It’s fun to hear even my 4 year old quote Philippians 2:14 when his older brother starts complaining or Psalm 34:13 when someone teases him.

Even as an adult, I found myself grooving to the music of Philippians 4:6-7. How cool the kids must find Seeds Music! I love it! What an ingenious way to remember Scripture!
